One of the most popular parks in Hamburg is “Planten un Blomen”. Beside splendid flowerbeds, cultivated lawns, idyllic brooks and small lakes it also offers an interesting leisure and light entertainment program.
[26 Jun 2005] —
Platen un Blomen is a Low German word that simply means “plants and flowers”.
The park is located in the inner city, only a few steps away from
Dammtor railway station. It extends over an area of 47 hectares (116 acres) and is
divided into several parts, like the Wallanlagen (embankments), the
Japanese gardens
with the Japanese teahouse,
the druggist’s garden and the rosery.
A walk through the park is worthwhile always. But the park still offers something more.
My personal highlight is the “concert of the colored fountains”
which is performed on the park lake every evening from May to
September. It starts at 10 pm (in September at 9 pm). Trick
fountains dance
on the lake every afternoon.
Who likes to do some sports should address the Wallanlagen. Beside
mini-golf or trampoline hopping
one can do some rounds on the roller skating rink that opens daily.
During the winter months the roller skating rink turns into an
ice rink.
A skate rental can be found at the skate shop.
The pavilion is a place of musical entertainment. They offer a changing
program from May to September. Only a few steps away from the pavilion,
the chess garden invites to a game of chess. And also the leisure program
for the little ones isn’t half bad. There are two children’s
playgrounds to have a good romp, pony riding, water play devices, a
potter room and an open-air theatre for children (near to the skating
rink).
