Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg – Best Sights and Attractions
From 1995 till 2006 Hamburg was my home town. On the following pages I’d like to guide you through the metropolis and to show you the bests sights and attractions of the city.
Best Sights and Attractions in Hamburg
- Dahlia Garden
(Volkspark)
Hamburg’s dahlia garden is the oldest existing dahlia garden in Europe. Its exhibiton comprises 14,000 dahlias. Open daily (July – October) from 8 am to nightfall. The admission is free.
- Elbe Beach
(Oevelgönne, Wittenbergen)
Hamburg’s Elbe banks offer some wonderful sand beaches. Like the beach in Oevelgönne with its museum harbour or the spacious beach in Wittenbergen with its picturesque lighthouse.
- Klein Flottbek
(Klein Flottbek, Nienstedten)
The district Klein Flottbek – in the west of Hamburg – offers some nice destinations, like the Jenisch Park, Teufelsbrück landing place or the Botanical Garden.
-
St. Pauli Landungsbrücken and Fischmarkt (St. Pauli)
For many visitors to Hamburg the first point of attraction is the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken. Here is the departure point for boat tours of the harbour and the bus tours through the city.
- Miniatur Wunderland
(Altstadt/Speicherstadt)
The (possibly) largest model train and miniature exhibition in the world – with a total area of 900 sq metres (9,700 sq ft) and a rail length of approx. 9 km (6 miles) – is located in Hamburg’s Speicherstadt.
- Ohlsdorf Cemetery
(Ohlsdorf)
An attraction of a different kind: Ohlsdorf Cemetery. It is the largest central cemetery, the oldest “garden cemetery” in Europe and the second largest graveyard in the world.
- Planten un Blomen
(Neustadt)
One of Hamburg’s most popular parks is located in the inner city. Beside splendid flowerbeds, cultivated lawns, idyllic brooks and small lakes it also offers an interesting leisure and light entertainment program.
- Speicherstadt
(Altstadt)
Once it was the largest cohesive warehouse ensemble of the world. Today its brick facades count to one of the landmarks of the city.
- Tierpark Hagenbeck
(Stellingen)
Hagenbeck’s Zoo is the only zoological garden in Europe that is run as a family business. It has been opened to public since 1907 – as the world’s first zoo featuring barless, moated animal exhibits simulating a natural landscape.
- Wildpark Schwarze Berge
(Rosengarten-Vahrendorf)
The game park at the outskirts of Hamburg is a nice destination for a day’s excursion at any time of the year. On an attractively laid out forest landscape and park scenery one can experience the European animal world in its natural surroundings very closely.
